Socrates said, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not fighting the old, but on building the new.” Fighting the old leaves us distracted and keeps us stuck without options to move beyond pain and suffering. Building the new makes space to let love and compassion enter and be the springboard for infinite possibilities. Sometimes the secret of change is simply in the unexpected places we take for granted because they are right in front of us.
When I ask the Universe to give me a sign, it’s sometimes the biggest epiphany that reveals itself in the smallest phrase or random person I meet. I love the magical confirmation I receive from billboard ads, a stranger’s smile, or chance meeting of an old friend. Focusing on building my new is the confirmation I need to stay in compassion, rather than contempt.
When I recently revisited a list of billboard phrases I’ve collected over the past year, it became clear to me how much I appreciate the influential messages, and feel our current media does have an upside if I choose to weed out all the downside. I couldn’t tell you what product they’re advertising, but I can tell you the feeling it invokes in me to live beyond my small self and take action toward my greater potential.
