When I have a moment on my own, I secretly enjoy an occasional greasy diner breakfast. I go to have black coffee, poached eggs, hash browns crispy, with a side of wheat toast. And… I want to go incognito, plus connect with the warm and friendly staff.  Mostly,

I want to immerse myself in my own thoughts, and have a quick meal to sustain my hunger, so I don’t have to bother with cooking.

Hemingway had his Paris Cafes and alcohol, I have my American Diners and coffee. I’m not professing to be Hemingway; although I did stand next to Mariel Hemingway in the produce section at whole foods once. Her cart was full of non-greasy-diner food… Food, I know I should be eating more of… and food I’ve once been the proud owner of.

Lately, it feels like my raw food, vegan days have stepped aside for the fastest and healthiest frozen food I can find for me and my daughter.  As Maya Angelou said, I “have crouched too long in the bruising darkness,” or in my kitchen, to worry about my cholesterol.

I can only imagine how Mariel Hemingway managed healthy habits being born into a creative family branded with pain and self torment. Choosing to live healthy in the face of that, is a tall order to contend with. We all have some form of non-healthy habits in our family history and it’s the choices we make in our current lives that pave the way for the next generation to live beyond our previous limitations. It’s the dance of life that reminds me to find balance for my mind, body and soul-food.

These days, I don’t profess to be anything other than myself, whole heartedly and individually. I’ve found pathways to greater access of personal freedom by owning who I am, regardless of etiquette, protocol and family history.  Personal freedom, with all its quirks and quagmires is more important to me than pretense. I’ve come out alive from all the pain I’ve endured and I like eating at greasy diners… even if it kills me.

Where are you finding more personal freedom in your life?  I’d love to hear from you in the comments.

As Always, Ignite Your Light and Let it Shine Bright!

Love,

Kris
